Two new syphilis diagnostics
Evaluation of two new syphilis diagnostics: one detecting syphilis from genital ulcer disease, and a confirmatory test used after an initial positive treponemal result.
Key findings
- Treponemal tests stay positive after a prior infection resolves, so scaling up dual HIV/syphilis testing was set to drive sharp increases in overtreatment.
- The new diagnostics produce meaningful reductions in overtreatment.
- They are cost-effective at certain price points, provided the diagnostic cost stays below a threshold share of the overtreatment costs it avoids.
